- Description: What if there's a different approach to SIBO, without antibiotics, herbal antimicrobials or even a low-FODMAP diet? Can SIBO be cured naturally and permanently?
- Author: GutMinds

[Expert Insights](#the-bottom-line)

It often becomes a vicious cycle: you take antibiotics, feel better for a while, and then the symptoms return. You're told it's because you didn't address the root cause, but figuring out what that is can be a very individual process. What works for someone else, may not work for you.

And even with herbal antimicrobials getting rid of SIBO for good seems impossible. It keeps coming back, sometimes shortly after treatment, sometimes months later.

So when I came across this completely different approach to SIBO, I was intrigued.

Why?

- It's quite unlike the treatments typically recommended by doctors and even naturopaths.
- It's simple. I really don't like complicated healing protocols because they are mentally draining, hard to stick with and expensive.
- It's cheap! Compare that with the cost of rifaximin, not to mention how much you can spend on probiotics and other SIBO supplements over time.
- You have to be pretty confident in your approach to give your book the title: *Permanent IBS*/*SIBO Resolution (*knowing people generally struggle with IBS and SIBO for years).

## *Permanent IBS*/*SIBO Resolution* by Dr. Kathleen Janel

Dr. Kathleen Janel uses high-dose methylsulfonylmethane (commonly referred to as MSM) to treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth over the course of a few months.

It’s the simplest, most hassle-free and most affordable approach to SIBO I have ever encountered.

## How is this different from other SIBO treatments?

SIBO treatments are typically quite complicated. A low FODMAP diet on its own is a nightmare and can make every day life very difficult.

Doctor’s appointments, antibiotics, targeted supplements, and often nervous system support all make conventional SIBO treatment expensive.

Dr. Janel’s basic protocol uses only MSM, and it is very inexpensive even though you need quite a lot of it.

If you need some extra support, she also mentions several other supplements such as digestive enzymes, fibre and probiotics. But even with these added in, it's still a very simple and affordable SIBO protocol.

Compared to other approaches, the simplicity and low cost of this method are a real relief.

## What are some things you might not like about the MSM protocol for SIBO?

The taste is not for the weak-minded.

MSM is bitter in a very peculiar way. But I believe that if you deal with SIBO symptoms day to day, this will not be the hardest pill to swallow in your life.

Titration requires patience and with chronic digestive issues, you often don’t have any left. For some people, reaching the full dose can take a very long time.

Another thing is the dose. You don’t typically take supplements in gram amounts per day, unless it is something like fibre or protein powder, so taking more than 20 g of MSM daily might feel off-putting, and it requires some trust in the protocol.

### MSM contains sulfur. It will make my SIBO worse.

Dr. Janel found the opposite. It turns out that MSM actually decreases fermentation, unlike sulfur-containing foods such as garlic, onions and leeks.

You’ll find quite a few testimonials in her book.

### Can SIBO be cured naturally?

The MSM protocol seems to be the most natural of all I have found, because it uses a compound your body needs every day, just in higher therapeutic doses.

And the fact you don’t need to take a lot of other supporting supplements is something I really appreciate.

#### The Bottom Line

What a refreshing approach to SIBO! And MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a really affordable supplement, starts working pretty quickly and doesn't disrupt your microbiota - even some natural antimicrobials such as oregano oil can be tough on your stomach.
