[Expert Insights & Quotes](#the-bottom-line)

Since gut health and the nervous system are so closely connected, I thought reading *The Dose Effect* by TJ Power would be a good idea.

The advice in the book is really simple, and that's where I think many people may struggle with it. Obvious solutions can be easy to overlook because the don't feel like they're doing enough.

For example, you know you should get some morning sunlight to support serotonin production, but getting out of a warm, cosy bed can be a challenge, especially in winter.

You know you shouldn't scroll social media before sleep, but in reality...

Here are the most memorable quotes from *The Dose Effect*:

## Mental and Physical Health

Your physical health affects your mental health more than many people realize.

*In our modern society*, *we have created the idea of 'mental health'. This can often lead to us feeling as though the challenges that occur in our thoughts are only happening in our minds*. *However*, *this isn't the reality*. *Instead*, *having a calm*, *healthy*, *energized body is essential to experiencing true joy within our minds*.

*The happier your body*, *the happier you will feel in your mind*.

*This is where things get really interesting*, *because the term* '*mental health*' *leads us to think this is all something occurring in our brains*. *It is clear*, *however*, *that your body also has a huge impact on the experience you have in your mind each day*.

*The vagus nerve enables communication between your gut and your brain*, *and is constantly assessing the state of your body*.

## Emotions and Feelings are Messengers

The thing is, it's not about being overly emotional or reactive, or treating feelings as facts. Listening to your gut is a completely different thing.

If you want to read more quotes about gut feelings, take a look at this article:

[Stacy Sims on Gut Health: Roar Book Review](https://www.gutminds.com/stacy-sims-on-gut-health-roar-book-review/)

*I want you to keep an important concept in mind*: *these feelings are coming up within you for a reason*. *When you observe them closely*, *you may notice a lot of them are* '*gut feelings*'. *They feel like they are coming from your body*, *and they are*!

*They are simply messages that are trying to shift how you are living your life*. *Your brain and body are incredible at survival*: *that is their primary objective*, *to stay alive and pass on your genes*.

*Just as healthy behaviours provide a rewarding feeling within you to reinforce doing them more regularly*, *unhealthy behaviours provide a negative feeling*, *to try and stop you engaging with them so often*. *Start listening to your emotions*.

*The more you listen to and align your daily behaviour to your emotions*, *the happier and healthier you become*.

## **H**appiness and Gratitude

It seems that happiness and gratitude go hand in hand - and gratitude isn't just a mental state; it can also affect your neurotransmitters.

*Happiness is equal to reality minus expectations*.

*In my opinion*, *gratitude is a non-negotiable strategy that is required to mentally thrive in our world today*.

*In this moment right now*, *what is the number one achievement I feel most proud of*?

## Tidiness and Neurotransmitters

It sounds like such a cliche to say you should make your bed as soon as you get up, but a clean and tidy environment really can help you be more productive.

*Our external environment reflects our inner environment*. *Create a clear space to experience a clear mind*.

*Your bedroom is an externalization of your mind*. *Clean it and observe what happens*.

*In order to successfully integrate a positive habit into your life*, *you must also develop the ability to notice and regularly celebrate your progress towards it*.

*Remember*, *developing the ability to overcome the part of your mind that doesn't want to do challenging things is essential to incorporating healthier behaviours into your life*.

## De-stressing

If you look into ways to manage stress, you'll quickly come across breathing exercises and adaptogens such as ashwagandha.

But these are things you do on your own, while in reality, we also need other people to help regulate our nervous system.

*Taking care of yourself and de-stressing your mind only enables you to be a greater*, *more loving support to the people in your life*.

*In moments where our minds are stressed*, *solving problems is extremely hard*.

*Creating more Laughter in your life is something you can intentionally focus on in order to elevate your mood every day*.

*I must see sunlight before I see social media*.

*Social connection is one of the core ingredients of a healthy and happy mind*.

### The Bottom Line

I've been curious about this book for months because it looks at 4 neurotransmitters (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins) rather than focusing on just one.

Dopamine gets a lot of attention today anyway because of the way social media can affect it, while serotonin comes close, partly because of the rising rates of depression.

I wish there was a chapter about acetylcholine too.
